"Welcome to Sri Lanka”, an MCC Library exhibition, Summer 2012/13

The Library team presents topical exhibitions and displays that draw on the collections of both the Library and the MCC Archives.

The main exhibition during the 2012/13 summer focused on cricket and was titled "Welcome to Sri Lanka", which looked at Australia-Sri Lanka cricket since their first encounter in 1884. A main focus of the exhibition was Sri Lanka’s first Test on the MCG in 1996.

It was customary for Australian cricket teams to play a game against Ceylon (Sri Lanka) en route to England to contest Ashes series from 1884. Sri Lanka did not play Test cricket until 1982 and Australia played a Test against the Sri Lankans for the first time in 1983.

The display featured a poster-sized copy of the 1996 scorecard that records the only Test century by a Sri Lankan on the MCG, when Asanka Gurusinha scored 143. It was also the match Muttiah Muralitharan was called for throwing by umpire Darrell Hair.

The display covered Sri Lanka’s triumph in the 1996 World Cup, in which they defeated Australia at Lahore in the final, and included recent Sri Lankan cricketers, Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas as well.
