Mike Scandrett imortalised in bronze
Wednesday December 11, 2013
There are not many members of the MCC Bowls Section who are aware that our Mike Scandrett is immortalised in bronze on the panels of the lovely MCC bronze doors from the old Pavilion at the MCG, which are now on display in the new members stand, on Level 2.
The artist, Robert Ingpen, was commissioned several years ago to do the sculptures for each door, one of which was to display images of the various sporting sections of the Melbourne Cricket Club. When he noticed Mike bowling on the old bowling green behind the pavilion, he asked him if he would agree to be the subject for the image of a bowler, to represent the Bowls Section of the club.
When Mike was attending the 50-year MCC members luncheon at the MCG on Friday November 29 2013, he willingly agreed to be pictured alongside the panel which accurately displays him in his typical action of delivery.
Dean O’Neill selected in regional side
Wednesday December 11, 2013
Congratulations to out star junior and top side skip, Dean O’Neill (pictured right), who has been selected in the Yarra Region representative side.
Dean will play in the State Sides Championship to be held on January 11 and 12 next year.
Bill Hardy – A potted history
Wednesday October 9, 2013
Congratulations to Bill Hardy, who was recently presented his “500 Medallion” by chairman Manny Galanos. In his presentation, Manny described Bill as possibly one our best draw bowlers at MCC Bowls.
The medallion recognises 500 Saturday Pennant games played over a career which commenced in 1982. Bill, who has only ever bowled for MCC, says that he is “tickled pink” to have been selected to play for such a prestigious club as MCC.
Asked about his memories, Bill spoke about the time his team was holding six shots at the crossover and an elderly team member kicked all the bowls back before the skip had a chance to get on the mat.
Another time he was asked to “draw around this bowl and under that one and finish just here.” The opposing Third muttered that he had just bought a washing machine that didn’t have as many instructions.
Bill is still playing for the club and is looking forward to chalking up another century.
Opening Day 2013
Sunday September 1, 2013
MCC Bowls Section greens were opened yesterday with Local MP Ted Baillieu rolling the first jack for ladies champion Linda Moore to play the first bowl in front of the 101 members in attendance.
Patrick Grutzner, as is now the tradition, attended (for the 31st year) and raised a fantastic $650.60 to assist Legacy in their wonderful work. Congratulations Pat and his assistants Geoff Brewer and Don Graham and thank you members.
After an enjoyable afternoon of bowls, Norm Whitehead and his rink of Bob Watt, Roy Sloggett and Jan Whitehead received the glasses for being the best performed on the day. With the fantastic weather organised by MCC committeeman Fred Oldfield (and welcome to bowls, Fred) it was a great start to the year.
MCC bowler selected in U18 Victorian team
Congratulations to MCC bowler, Dean O'Neil, on his selection in the U18 Victorian team. Victoria will play a series against Tasmania in Tasmania from December 10 to 12.
We are extremely proud of his progress in bowls since joining us in October 2009.
Good luck, Dean!
MCC Bowls Section’s Biggest Morning Tea raises over $2000!
On Thursday May 31 the MCC’s Bowls Section held their Biggest Morning Tea to raise funds for cancer research.
Ninty-six members and guests attended the function held at the Swinburne Avenue bowls club in Hawthorn. Guests were treated to delicious scones and sandwiches made by the "bowling girls" served with tea and coffee.
The "stars" of the morning included Robert Ingpen, designer and artist of the bronze doors and tapestry at the Melbourne Cricket Club. Guests were blessed to learn and hear from Bob of his journey with these magnificent works of art.
The Honourable Alan McDonald, a former MCC Committeeman, was the auctioneer for a beautiful bottle of wine from Best's vineyards at Mount Gambier. McDonald declared he had never been an auctioneer before, however he was very professional, extraordinarily funny, and managed a very good price for the wine!
Jane Nathan, current MCC Committee member and great supporter of the women bowlers, was at her usual best when drawing the raffle. As you can imagine, lots of fun comments were made while presenting the prizes to the winners.
Finally, those that wished to join Gerry Teague on the green for a lesson on the intricacies of the game of bowls we were thrilled to do so in the sunny conditions. Well done Gerry, as I think we are about to have some new members join.
Thank you very much to those involved in this special day. Thank you to Ian Cave, Chairman of MCC Bowls Section, for giving us the opportunity to use Swinburne Avenue for this very worthwhile function for cancer research. Overall $2086 was donated to the Cancer Council.
