MCC Netball Premiers, 2011

Netball

The MCC netball team in action. In February, 2011 netball joined the list of sports in which the MCC competes. It recently became a special interest group of the Melbourne Cricket Club.

The first MCC Netball event was a friendly tournament against the Hong Kong Cricket Club.

The enthusiastic participation of the players during this event led the club to enter three teams into the Parkville Netball Association in August, 2011.

The first season was a success, with all three teams experiencing wins in the tough competition.

The top team, MCC 1, won the A1 premiership and subsequently received an invitation to join Parkville NA’s Premier Division in February, 2012.

As well as participating competitively, social events are also a key part of its activities. Past events have included a lawns bowls Christmas party, a pub dinner meet and greet, and a welcome function at the MCG.

MCC netballers also keep up to date via a private Facebook group and a Twitter account.

Netball has now expanded from three to five teams with MCC 1 currently playing on Tuesday nights in Premier Division 5 and MCC 2, 3, 4 and 5 complete on Monday nights in divisions A4, C1, C2 and C4.

Games are played at the State Hockey and Netball Centre and all teams train on Thursday evenings at Melbourne Girls Grammar School, South Yarra.

MCC Netball encourages all MCC members with an interest in playing netball, regardless of experience, to contact the club.
