Thirds settle for second
Tuesday December 10, 2012
It was a close encounter that saw the MCC’s third team miss out on the Parkville Netball Competition’s Division A5 title. MCC 3 entered the finals series on top of the ladder having won all but one game throughout the season. The only team to beat them were The Pink Bibs – their opponents in the grand final.
Despite nerves, both MCC 3 and The Pink Bibs came out firing, going goal-for-goal for the first quarter and a half. There were some great plays up the MCC’s attacking end with mid-courters Shelley Salter and Lisa Corrigan feeding the ball perfectly to goalers Rebecca Wittman and Kate Wilkinson. Unfortunately turnovers towards the end of the second quarter proved costly, giving The Pink Bibs a 5 goal lead at half-time.
Coach, Heather Dawkins, addressed the girls at the break in an attempt to inspire a second half comeback. Despite some great defensive intercepts from Katrina Horkings and Alex Perry, the girls couldn’t claw their way back from the lead they had given the Pink Bibs in the first half, eventually going down, 29 – 22.
Of the four MCC teams to make the finals this season, MCC 3 were the only team to win through to their grand final. MCC 1, 2 and 4 all lost narrowly in their elimination finals. The girls are now more determined than ever to succeed and are looking forward to the autumn season in 2013.
