    MCC Tennis Section action2010 Tennis Victoria Pennant

    Sixteen teams (nine mens and seven womens teams) have been submitted to Tennis Victoria for grading in the 2010 pennant season.

    The season commenced on April 17, except for State Grade which will be played in October.

    We are three rounds into our season and so far so good. Our Mens and Womens Grade 1 teams are third and fourth.

    Our Womens team will be strengthened with the return of our No.1, Karen Filippou who has been competing in tournaments interstate.

    2009/10 Bayside Competition
    March 23, 2010

    Four of our five teams entered in the Bayside summer competition finished in their respective fours and competed in the finals.

    Our Women’s Section 2 Singles/Doubles team won the premiership in a tightly fought final. Mens Section 2 and were defeated in the semi final and Men’s Section 4 and Women’s Section 1 were beaten in their preliminary finals.

    Annual General Meeting

    Our Annual General Meeting was held on December 8 and the following committee will represent the Section in 2009/10:

    Chairman - Peter Richardson
    Treasurer - Kerrie Jordan
    Secretary - Fran Graham
    General - Ann Harrison, Paul Jeffery, Kris Peach, Jordana Dymond, Chiro Mukerjea, Bree Hammond, Ben Ellwood, Tegan Durham and Joseph Rafter.

    Our annual dinner was held in the MCC Committee room on October 24 and all those attending enjoyed the evening. Allan Stone was awarded legend status of the Tennis Section.

    2009 Tennis Victoria Pennant

    Men’s Grade 3 was the only Tier 2 Premiership won. Women’s Grades 1 & 3 and Men’s Grade 8 were unfortunately Runners-Up. Overall, it has been a very successful season.

    Paul McNamee was awarded Tennis Victoria Player of the Year in the Men’s Seniors Grade 1 section.

    The Dr. Donald Cordner award for the most valuable player was awarded to Alice Tucker, a member of the losing Women’s Grade 3 team. She was undefeated in all the singles matches she played, including her 3 finals matches.

    MCC wins Womens 2007 State Grade Pennant

    The 2007 Tennis Victoria Pennant Competition State Grade Finals were held on Sunday, August 19, at Grace Park Lawn Tennis Club in Hawthorn.

    The MCC women’s team, consisting of Evie Dominikovic, Emma Cioffi, Annabel Ellwood and Joanne Limmer, defeated Kooyong to win the premiership. The team won the four singles matches in straight sets to take out the first premiership for our women’s section.

    The individual women's results were:

    • E Dominikovic def A Szili 6-4, 6-2
    • E Cioffi def M Springall 6-3, 6-1
    • A Ellwood def D Kypreos 6-0, 6-0
    • J Limmer def L Mercuri 6-1, 6-0

    The doubles were not played as a result had been reached

    Our men’s team, consisting of Taso Vasiliadis, Ben Ellwood, Bryce Durham and David Spierings, also played Kooyong in the final but were not as fortunate, going down in the doubles after being two-all at the conclusion of the singles.

    The individual men's results were:

    • T Vasiliadis lost to L Pearson 1-6, 4-6
    • B Ellwood def D Bidmeade 7-6, 4-6, 6-2
    • B Durham lost to P Arber 2-6, 2-6
    • D Spierings def M Coghlan 7-5, 5-7, 6-2
    • The men's double results were: Ellwood/Scrutton lost to Pearson/Coghlan 1-6, 0-6

    In a first for any pennant club, our State Grade teams were captained by brother and sister, Ben and Annabel Ellwood, both being ranked No.1 in Australia as juniors in 1994.

    Individual Performances
    Ashleigh Hancock won her first National singles title.  Fourth-seeded Ashleigh defeated the no. 1 seed Sophie Letcher (QLD) in straight sets 76 63 to claim the Girls 14's National singles title.

    The event was recently held in Brisbane and Ashleigh was part of the NHPA Melbourne tour that took over 25 athletes to the Nationals events. Ashleigh is also the number one in our Grade 2 pennant team playing in the Grand Final.

    Alexander Babanine, who joined our Section this year, lost in the final of the 12’s National Singles but went on to win the doubles title.
