The Women of the MCC invites both female and male members as well as their guests to the Committee Room on Saturday August 17 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first recorded women’s football match, while enjoying the AFL game between Richmond and Carlton.
We are thrilled to confirm our guest speakers are Caroline Wilson (Fairfax) and Dr Robert Hess (Victoria University College of Sport and Exercise Science).
Wilson has been covering football since 1982. She was the first woman to cover Australian Rules Football on a full time basis and the first woman to win the AFL’s gold medal media awards. She is the chief football writer for The Age and a panelist on Footy Classified on Channel 9.
Dr Hess is one of Australia’s foremost sport historians. One of his research interests includes the ‘secret’ history of female players. Who better to speak on the 80th anniversary of the first ever recorded women’s football game between Carlton XVIII and Richmond on Saturday August 12, 1933.
During the event we will be auctioning off signed jumpers of the competing teams, with all proceeds raised going to the WOMCC chosen charity “The Mirabel Foundation”.
The package includes canapés on arrival, a specially selected main course and beverage package included pre-match followed by traditional half-time footy-fare. A cash bar will operate during the game.
The package also includes a reserved seat on Level 2 to watch the match.
Guests will need a visitor ticket to enter the Reserve and members should ensure they pre-purchase these through the usual purchase points. There is a limit of two guests per member.
The Mirabel Foundation – “Every child deserves a childhood”
Mirabel assists children who have been orphaned or abandoned due to parental illicit drug use and are now in the care of extended family (kinship care).
Mirabel believes that every child deserves a childhood and its mission is to break the destructive cycle of addiction.
Mirabel supports children aged 0-17 years and works at restoring a child’s sense of self-worth, belonging and hope for the future in order for them to reach their full potential as young adults.
Mirabel believes that investing in children is the most compassionate and economic investment we can make.
