Club XI grand final 2012
Old Xavier 1 and Old Wesley tied their grand final match today in what was a thrilling contest played in front of a decent crowd on the main oval at Xavier College.
Old Xavier 1 batted first and got off to a solid start before a flurry of wickets saw them struggle to put on a big score. They were bowled out for 115 with Dan Rush making 25. His brother Joe contributing 20 and Dan Curtain taking up where he left off last week making a valuable 34. Troy Harbinson and Andrew Crow were the pick of the Old Wesley bowlers, both taking 3/24.
In reply, Old Wesley lost the opener Haylock for nought before Jorgensen and Unsworth steadied the ship to take the total to 1/48. Then, in an inspired bowling spell, Hannan bowled Unsworth for 14 and removed Messrs, Louis and Tardiff for ducks. Bull chipped in bowling Harbinson, also for a duck. Old Xavier 1 captain Matt Cosgrave then removed his nemesis Zimbacks for two and all of a sudden Old Wesley were 6/70 and in a real dog fight. Restein and Jorgenson took up the challenge and steadily took the score to 112 before the Old Xavier 1 skipper had him caught for a hard fought 36. O’Flaherty then removed the opener Jorgensen for a superb 50 and Old Wesley were now 8/113.
Cosgrave then went to bowl the 38th over with the scores all tied on 115 only to be told he had miscalculated as he had bowled his eight overs. In what can now be described as a master stroke, the skipper tossed the ball to Curtain (who apparently had not bowled in a match this season) who proceeded to take two for none. Old Wesley was bowled out for 115 and the match tied. The tension of such a tight match between two evenly matched teams was clearly evident where eight ducks were made with a further two not out on nought. Only one batsman reached 50.
Old Xavier 1, by virtue of finishing higher than Old Wesley, win the title in season 2011/12 and are worthy winners. My congratulations to the Old Xavier CC for not only their performance today but in their efforts throughout the season including the semi-final win last week against a very strong Old Scotch 1 side.
Commiserations to Old Wesley who are runners up for the second successive time. However, it was a terrific effort to have come from sixth place to make it to the final, accounting for the undefeated Melbourne High School Old Boys in the semi-final and to have come so close to pulling off a win in the grand final today.
My sincere thanks to the two umpires today – John Mackinnon and Adrian Fisher – who did a superb job. The feedback from the umpires was “an experience thoroughly enjoyed and with two good teams who played the game in great spirit”.
On behalf of the MCC, a big thank you to all clubs, officials and players who have made this season such a successful one. Also a huge thank you to Darrell Holt and his panel of umpires who bring a high level of professionalism to this competition. You all do a terrific job and on behalf of all clubs and players we are indebted and grateful for all your hard work.
