In recent days, the MCC with the MCG Trust has reached agreement with the AFL and State Government on a number of significant developments concerning the future of the MCG and surrounding Yarra Park precinct.
The key elements are:
1. The licence agreement between the MCC and the AFL has been extended by five years, ensuring AFL football and the grand final will continue to be played at the MCG until 2037. This is a great result for MCC members, given this extension to our football content at the MCG.
2. AFL clubs playing home games at the MCG will receive at least an additional $4.6 million a year – or $100,000 a game – for the next 10 years from MCG revenues.
3. The management of Yarra Park will transfer to the MCG Trust, who in turn will delegate operational management of the parklands to the MCC. Central to this transfer is a key water recycling and landscaping project in Yarra Park, which will secure the future of the trees in the park and preserve existing car parking entitlements.
4. The Victorian Government will deliver a capped contribution of $30 million towards a major refurbishment of the AFL Members Reserve in the Great Southern Stand and $6 million towards the water-saving project in Yarra Park.
The Yarra Park project is a significant undertaking by the MCC in its role as ground manager in order to improve the health of the parklands. We will keep members informed about further developments as they become available.
