Marylebone takes the honours at MCG

Dec 31, 2010

Melbourne CC captain Simon Dart (left) tosses the coin with Marylebone CC cpunterpart Keith Bradshaw at the MCG on December 31, 2010.In hot, oppressive conditions more suited to the home team, Marylebone Cricket Club has defeated Melbourne Cricket Club by 39 runs in a competitive traditional post-Ashes Test clash at the MCG today.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat, our UK visitors took advantage of excellent batting conditions to post 8/234 c.c. from 45 overs.

Due to 40-degree heat, the match was reduced from 50 overs per side after agreement between the two teams.

Ian Cockbain top scored for Marylebone with a sprightly 65, while good support was offered by David Cranfield-Thompson (46) and Cricket Victoria chief executive Tony Dodemaide (43).

Left-arm off spinner Will Ryan and paceman Callum O'Neill each picked up two wickets for MCC.

In reply, the home side started slowly and once captain Simon Dart departed for a well-made 49, it was always going to be a struggle, eventually finishing at 9/194 at the end of its 45 overs.

Dodemaide capped off a fine match by taking 4/36.
