Hong Kong CC visit a sporting success

Feb 16, 2011

Hockey action from the MCC vs Hong Kong CC match at Melbourne High School. The club was delighted to host reciprocal counterpart Hong Kong Cricket Club on a six-sport tour from January 30 to February 5 across several prominent Melbourne sports venues.

The 70-strong touring party, led by Hong Kong CC president Tony Melloy, competed in cricket, squash, golf, tennis, hockey and netball. The visit was topped off by a dinner hosted by the MCC on February 2 in the Members Dining Room.

It was an extremely successful tour showcasing the sporting pursuits of the club, with some fantastic battles across the six sports. We thank all members who participated and represented the club proudly and we look forward to a return visit in April to help Hong Kong CC celebrate its 160th birthday.

Netball action between MCC and Hong Kong CC at the State Netball and Hockey Centre. The tour was also significant in that it represented the first time in the club’s history that the MCC had fielded a representative team in netball.

We were delighted by the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the 60 female members who initially answered the call and the final squad that took the court represented the club with distinction.

While the ladies couldn’t topple their Hong Kong opponents in any of the three matches, the official trophy match at the State Netball and Hockey Centre was a thriller.

The MCC hauled back an eight-goal half time deficit to level the scores, only for the visitors to score in the final five seconds of the match to secure a one-goal victory.

Our cricketers suffered a heavy defeat in their match at the MCG on February 2, copping an eight-wicket hiding in a high-quality display by the visitors. The club was left to find solace in the XXIX Club’s win at the Albert Ground two days earlier!

Golf action from the MCC vs Hong Kong CC match at Victoria Golf Club. Our golfers had one of the busiest itineraries, with five matches scheduled over the six-day tournament. If this wasn’t enough, the visitors also arranged their own matches, meaning some golfers were playing eight games of golf in their seven-day visit to Melbourne!

The official match was held at Victoria Golf Club, with the MCC taking home the Melloy Cup six matches to two, with one match halved.

We played two hockey matches against Hong Kong CC, both held at Melbourne High School. The MCC won the warm-up match, while the official match proved to be a great tussle, with scores tied 3-3 with five minutes remaining. The game’s hero was MCC hockey secretary Tim Herringshaw, who hit the winning goal with a great assist from Paul Turk in the dying minutes.

The MCC also ran out winners in tennis action at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. In warm and windy conditions, the home side prevailed three rubbers to one. To round out proceedings, our squash team took a clean sweep of their official matches at the RACV Club.
