MCC baseball...100 years ago...

Nov 29, 2011

Baseball has changed a lot over the years, but not so much to make it unrecognisable, some things change, but the fundamentals remain the same.

One hundred years ago, the MCC and Fitzroy were the powerhouses of the league and were locked in a 20-year struggle for dominance.

MCC won its fifth pennant in a row in 1911 and would go onto win seven on the trot, the streak only broken by Fitzroy in 1914 who went on to be a very strong force in the early 1920s.

The description of the game is an interesting read, a pitcher-dominated contest, great defence by MCC, heads up baserunning by Ballantyne to steal home and some great names in the team that become long-time servants of the MCC.

On September 10, 1911 the MCC Baseball Section won the VBA A grade pennant over Fitzroy 2-1.

The final out was a dramatic double play from a fine pick-up and throw from right fielder Ransford to Henty to Taylor to catch future Baseball Victoria life member and legend Charles Lansdown at the plate.

Read all about it on the MCC Baseball Section website.
