The annual cricket match between the MCC and the Kensington Cricket Club was played at the Albert Cricket Ground on December 27, 2011 and proved again a roaring success.
After the disappointment of the 2010 fixture, where no game was played due to the MCC being unable to field a side to travel to Kensington, the anticipation for this year’s game was higher than normal.
Played on a spectacular day, the match had it all. The entire day was underlined with two competitive sides, some first class cricket and, more importantly, a tremendously social atmosphere.
As is tradition, the host side batted first, losing a couple of early wickets but still moving the score along at 2/60 in the 10th over. It took an outstanding innings from one of the club’s real characters and regular tourists in order for the MCC to post a reasonable score.
Justin Graham scored 122 off 105 balls and looked in sublime form. He flayed the Kensington bowlers to all corners of the Albert Ground and his knock included 12 fours and four sixes. With solid contributions from most of the other batsmen the MCC managed 251 off its 40 overs.
In reply, Kensington CC got off to an unbelievable start and at one stage were on track to reach the MCC’s target in under 25 overs. Jake Brown, the captain of “The Browns”, smashed a rapid fire 83 (63 balls) and took the score to 1/118 before he was caught in the deep.
However, from that point on the Demons managed to regain control of the innings through some quality spin bowling from Sam Brewin (2/28) and Will Ryan (3/27).
Ultimately, the Demons held on to record a well deserved 26-run victory in the 38th over.
The post match celebrations, as always, embodied the harmony and respect shared between the two clubs and a good time was had by all.
The young MCC side is looking forward to travelling to South Australia at the end of this year to write its own chapter in the contests for the sought-after Bob Lloyd Shield.
