MCG head groundsman departs

Jul 19, 2012

Cameron HodgkinsThe Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) regrets to advise that arenas operations manager Cameron Hodgkins has tendered his resignation, effective August 3.

Hodgkins has been in charge of turf operations at the MCG for the past four years, returning to the MCC after a five-year stint as head curator at Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

He had previously worked for the MCC as a tradesperson and then assistant turf manager from 1992-2003.

Hodgkins and his family will relocate to Queensland, where he will be the head curator of Anglican Church Grammar School in East Brisbane.

Hodgkins informed the MCC of his decision early this week.

“We are deeply disappointed to have to say farewell to Cameron,” said MCC CEO Stephen Gough.

“During his time as arenas operations manager, Cameron has been instrumental in improving the MCG arena turf quality through improved practices and the use of turf grow lights. The quality of the playing surface is paramount for any stadium and he has played an integral part in our success.

“Cameron has also produced Australia’s best first-class cricket pitches, as recognised by the cricket fraternity,” said Gough.

“His recent selection by Cricket Australia to be Australia’s sole representative at the ICC Conference on Cricket in Dubai is indicative of the high regard in which he is held.

“We thank Cameron for his enormous contribution to the MCC and MCG, and we wish he and his family the very best for their future life in Queensland.”

The MCC will undertake a global search for a suitable replacement in the near future.
