Australia’s longest consecutive stair climb challenge will be held for the first time at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday June 16, 2013.
The first event of its kind in Australia, Stadium Stomp MCG presents a unique fitness challenge. It is not a competition or a race, but a personal test of stamina and concentration.
Taking stair climbing and endurance events to a whole new level, Stadium Stomp provides entrants with the one-off opportunity to take on the 7343 steps on the top and bottom seating levels of the MCG and raise money for a nominated charity at the same time.
How it works
Stadium Stomp has two courses to test even the fittest entrants. The half course is a complete circuit of the MCG’s Level 1 seating bowl, walking up or down every flight of stairs between the seats on that level until back to the start.
It’s approximately 1890 steps and will take around 20 minutes to complete.
The full course then takes entrants up to Level 4 to complete a second circuit of the MCG; again walking up or down every flight of stairs between the seats on that level until back to the start.
The full course is approximately 7343 steps and will take anywhere from 45 minutes to more than two hours to complete, depending on fitness levels.
Staggered start times from 8am to 3pm will ensure the stairs won’t become too congested.
Who can enter?
Anyone 14 years and older can enter Stadium Stomp as individuals or in teams. You can form your own team or join a team that has already entered and is looking for more members.

There will also be a designated spectators’ viewing area so friends and family can watch the action.
Why do it?
There aren’t many people in Melbourne who haven’t been to the MCG to watch a game and cheered from the stands.
Now Melburnians can experience the ‘G in a unique way and be among the first people to stomp their way around the stadium.
If you need a fitness reason, stair climbing is an excellent way to build cardiorespiratory endurance and lower-body muscular endurance and strength.
Climbing a flight of stairs (10 steps) is the equivalent calorie burn of taking 38 steps on level ground, so it’s almost four times as beneficial to take the stairs.
