Explanation of power outage - Collingwood v Port Adelaide

May 31, 2009

The Melbourne Cricket Ground lost power during this afternoon’s match between Collingwood and Port Adelaide.

The electricity feed from CitiPower was lost at 4.53pm and restored within a few minutes once the power was switched to an alternative feed.

The light towers took longer to return to full light as there is a need to wait 15 minutes for the towers to cool down before being switched back on again.

The public area of the Olympic Stand, including the coaches’ boxes and light towers one, two and six were affected.

CitiPower have informed us the outage was caused due to a cable fault which affected a substation that feeds power to the Jolimont and East Melbourne areas.
