Oh, the memories

From the Members Wednesday APR 14

By Anne Cahill Lambert AM

Like many MCC members, I missed attending the `G during the year that was ravaged by Covid. As an interstate member, it was difficult once things started to open up. But we were able to redress that in February and March (more about the March visit on another occasion).

The first opportunity came at the end of February as I organised a big family ‘staycation’ in Melbourne for our extended family, given the length of time it had been since we had all seen one another. I decided to kick off the event with lunch in the Committee Room with my husband and our No. 1 son.

When I was made a member in the first tranche of women admitted to membership in 1984, my soon-to-be father-in-law was aghast. His son (and my fiancée) was not a member and I recall the conversation going along the lines of “but there are perfectly good men out there”. He and I had a lovely relationship of baiting one another about the rights and role of women in society! So, my husband is not a member, but our son is. Both are Collingwood supporters.

The Committee Room lunch lived up to our anticipation and expectations. It was the loveliest day with beautiful food, fabulous service and, of course, a view to thoroughly enjoy. We mulled over the great games that had occurred there, especially Hawks v Pies. I made the guys go into the men’s toilet to look at the fabulous view from the urinal (don’t ask me how I know about it).

Trevor (our son) is a community football legend. He played for Montmorency, trained for a while with Fitzroy, went back to Montmorency and eventually helped establish the Laurimar Sporting Club. He coached many Auskick juniors as well as netball players. His second oldest son, Billy, played his first match with the seniors for Laurimar this last weekend. He was a star and his team just snuck over the line with the last kick of the day.

Trevor died on Wednesday night (before his son’s big game) from brain cancer. He was 49 years old. He has a gorgeous wife, Jen, and six beautiful children. His lunch at the ‘G at the end of February was his last attendance as a member. What a great opportunity we had to celebrate and kick off our weekend.

Vale Member No. 107 252. We will all miss you.
