Leveling the playing field - MCC Foundation extends SESF partnership

The Melbourne Cricket Club Foundation has renewed its partnership with the Sports Excellence Scholarship Fund (SESF) for a further three years, reaffirming a shared commitment to supporting the next generation of sporting talent.

Originally established as a Victorian initiative which expanded nationally in 2023, SESF supports talented young athletes aged 10–18 who have been selected to represent their state, territory or country but face financial barriers to participation.

Through the allocation of $1,000 scholarships to support costs from travel to uniforms, SESF seeks to ensure that financial circumstances do not limit opportunity.

The MCC Foundation has formally partnered with SESF for the past five years. During this time, the MCC Foundation and SESF have collaboratively enabled 300 young athletes facing economic hardship to compete at the highest level. Through the extension of the partnership for a further three years, that number is set to grow to well over 500 young athletes.

The MCC Foundation’s support of SESF reflects the Club’s ongoing commitment to providing access to sport for all.

In November this year SESF reached a major milestone; awarding its 1000th scholarship, proudly funded by the MCC Foundation.

Having battled significant medical challenges since early childhood, Ivy Merrit found a passion for and community in lacrosse. After being selected to represent Victoria at the Under 15 level, Ivy’s mum applied to the SESF to help fund the trip to Perth.  With SESF and the MCC Foundation’s support, Ivy was able to compete at Nationals and is continuing to chase further goals in her sporting journey.

Christian Johnston, Chair of the MCC Foundation, said stories like Ivy’s demonstrate the power of sport to create opportunity.

“Through our partnership with SESF, the MCC Foundation is proud to help level the playing field for young Australian sportspeople.”

“We know sport is a powerful vehicle for good. Representing their state or country not only allows these young athletes to test their abilities, but also gives them the chance to build confidence, form lasting friendships and be inspired by the many pathways open to them.”

“We look forward to continuing our partnership with SESF and helping more talented athletes pursue their sporting ambitions and reach their full potential.”

SESF welcomed the extension of the partnership, highlighting the impact achieved to date and the opportunity ahead.

“Behind every SESF scholarship is not just an athlete, but a family, a school and a community that gets to see their young person shine,” said Nick Mooney, SESF Director.

“With continued support from the MCC Foundation, SESF can continue investing in resilience, leadership and future role models.”
