Melbourne Cricket Club has claimed a dramatic final-over victory against Marylebone Cricket Club in the traditional post-Boxing Day Ashes Test fixture at the MCG, adding another memorable chapter to the long-standing rivalry between the reciprocal clubs.

Chasing 220 for victory, the home side held its nerve to reach the target eight wickets down with five balls remaining, sealing a hard-fought win.

Batting first, Marylebone posted 9/220 from 50 overs, led by Max Tryfonos 50 (63) and Peter Hatzoglou 51 (57), with Nottinghamshire’s Joe Pocklington contributing 41 (72). Melbourne’s bowling attack was led by Glenn Hannah 2/38 (10) and Christian Howe 2/30 (8).

In reply, Melbourne CC made a brisk start, with openers James Meehan 34 (55) and Ben Wickham 30 (26) combining for a rapid 47-run stand inside seven overs. Marylebone fought back through the middle overs to reduce the home side to 5/149, setting up a tense finish.

Crucial contributions from Matthew Brown 26 (38), Ritin Raman 32 (54), Andrew Kent 32 (54) and Peter Petricola 19* (26) ensured Melbourne crossed the line in the final over.

First contested in 1993, the fixture is traditionally played the day after the conclusion of Ashes Tests at the MCG and Lord’s.

Melbourne’s victory narrows the overall record, with the ledger now standing at 9-8 in favour of Marylebone, alongside one wash-out.
