The Melbourne Cricket Club is deeply saddened by the loss of Neale Daniher AO following a lengthy battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

A universally admired footballer and coach at AFL level, Daniher fought a remarkable battle against the beast that is MND. Alongside daughter Bec, he helped establish the FightMND charity to help raise vital funds towards a potential cure.

Daniher’s contributions both to sport and the broader community was recognised at the MCG in 2021 with a dedicated walkway between William Barak Bridge and the ‘G named Daniher’s Way – fitting recognition for someone who made such an impact – not just in sport, but for people around the country.

Daniher played 82 games for Essendon before coaching the Melbourne Football Club for 223 games.

Melbourne Cricket Club President Fred Oldfield acknowledged Neale’s legacy and altruistic attitude to life.

“Neale defied all odds during his battle with MND and was a remarkable person in every sense,” Mr Oldfield said.

“Beyond Neale’s on-field efforts at the MCG during his playing and coaching career, his ability to unite the community for the annual Big Freeze at the ‘G was truly incredible to witness.

“The Club will continue to honour Neale’s memory and our thoughts remain with the Daniher family.”
