About Frank Grey Smith
Dubbed by his contemporaries as 'the most trusted and cautious financier in Australia', Frank Grey Smith was a hero of the Melbourne Cricket Club.
An MCC member since 1849, Grey Smith was elected vice-president in 1879 during the term of Sir William Clarke. He subsequently shouldered most of the presidential duties and responsibilities before being elected to the presidency himself in 1886.
Seeing the Club through the financially difficult and dangerous times of the 1890s, he ensured the MCC was on solid ground. Grey Smith's wise counsel and steadying influence were complemented by an innate sportsmanship that proposed the notion that the welfare of cricket was more important than the success of the team.
