The second book published under the Melbourne Cricket Club’s publishing support program, Batts, Balls and Stumps, written by MCC volunteer and 50-Year member James Brear, has officially been launched.

In front of family, friends and colleagues at the book’s official launch in the Long Room, Mr Brear shared the depth of historical research required to do this story justice – a story focused on the life and times of the men traditionally considered the founders of the Club.

In welcoming guests in attendance, MCC President Fred Oldfield recognised Mr Breer as one of the storytellers of the MCG, and as a Club built on connection, emphasised the importance of allowing these stories to be written, shared, and celebrated.

Batts, Balls and Stumps brings to life the story of the founders of the MCC and their shared passion for cricket. The purchase of a set of cricket equipment – batts, balls and stumps – provides context to the early foundations of the MCC, with Mr Brear taking readers on a historical journey.

From learning more about those whose input was influential to the Club’s development, to the simple joy of cricket way back in 1838 when Melbourne was a developing city, Batts, Balls and Stumps explores the Club’s early foundations in extraordinary depth.

The MCC is the largest sporting club in Australia, revered across the world.

And now, Batts, Balls and Stumps takes you back to where it all began.

Batts, Balls and Stumps is available for purchase via the MCG Shop.
